Behind Open Screens

In this piece of the Masked Realities collection, the darker effects of the internet are brought to the forefront of the viewer’s mind, effects that are often less talked about. Behind the web of the internet lie users of unknown identities. The faceless silhouettes symbolize the undisclosed identities of users online; some of whom have sinister intentions as is represented by the silhouette in the red hood and more of whom are affected by those with ill intentions, represented by the two silhouettes in distress. Although mostly overlooked, the effects of faceless online menaces are still currently experienced by people around the world, by victims who get bullied, harassed and deceived on the net. Waheeda uses this piece to bring light to the increasingly neglected plight that has befallen many victims, reminding everybody that just because the dangers of the internet are not frequently brought up in recent times doesn’t mean that these dangers have ceased to exist. It serves as a reminder to always be cautious, even when using commodities like the internet.
